You matter. Your writing matters. You are part of a community that supports your creative work.

You learn from music, from watching athletes

Holy Cow! Phil Rizzuto

After a week of movie immersion at the Florida Film Festival, I’m challenging myself to see how I can apply what I experienced to my writing. Don’t tell the MAD about Words Workshop Department I said this, but the fact is, you don’t have to take a class or belong to a workshop group to learn how to write. There are many teachers available to us. We just have to pay attention.

“You learn from music, from watching great athletes at work — how disciplined they are, how they move. You learn these things by watching a shortstop at work, how he concentrates on one thing at a time. You learn from classic music, from the blues and jazz, from bluegrass. From all this, you learn how to sustain a great line without bringing in unnecessary words.” – Ernest Gaines interviewed in the Missouri Review
