The “Turn:” The Poem as Journey
THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT!
A Poetry Workshop with Russ Kesler
In any good poem we should be able to overhear a speaker in tension either with him- or herself or another person, or with his or her surroundings or situation. That condition implies a sense of movement, if not outright argument, in the poem, as the speaker describes and works through the “plot” the poem sets up. And if that is the case, we should be able to discern a point at which the poem turns toward resolution of the problem. The turn might manifest itself in any number of ways, via syntax, tone, imagery, structure, etc.
In this workshop, we’ll practice reading poems with an eye and ear toward listening for the turn the poem makes and how where that turn occurs affects our experience of the poem. Along the way, we’ll work through a number of exercises intended to help get poems started, and we’ll allow time for small group feedback on the rough drafts produced during the workshop.
Russ Kesler teaches writing at the University of Central Florida. His book of poems, A Small Fire, was published in 2001
